EPA 608 testing

Where to book your EPA 608 exam

HardhatBound doesn’t administer the EPA 608 exam — here are the EPA-approved ways to take it.

The EPA is rolling out a revised Section 608 exam. According to ESCO Institute (via ACHR News, 19 Sep 2026), exams from the old question bank are no longer accepted from 1 January 2027. Existing certifications stay valid. Check which version your provider offers before you book.

More basics
  • Universal means passing all four sections.
  • You must pass Core to receive any certification type.

Two exam versions are offered right now: the 2018 exam (based on the 9th edition manual) and the 2026 exam (based on the 10th edition), both $85. Spanish exam available.

Checked 13 Oct 2026

In person: call ESCO's designated proctors at 800-726-9696.

$85 includes one attempt at each section. If you fail a section, you retake only that section; additional fees apply.

You need: a computer or laptop with a webcam and microphone, reliable internet, a government-issued photo ID, a quiet private room, and Guardian Browser (or the ProctorU Chrome extension). Tablets, iPads and Chromebooks are not supported.

Book at least 72 hours ahead to avoid rush fees.

Results the same day; card mailed the next business day.

HVAC Excellence's EPA 608 page links to ESCO's online exam — there is no separate HVAC Excellence exam or price.

Digital study materials + exam: $175. Hard copy study materials + exam: $185. Spanish hard copy study materials + exam: $195.

Checked 13 Oct 2026

Universal exam retakes: $110. Price confirmed by Mainstream by email on 13 Oct 2026.

Mainstream did not quote a separate price for Type II or Type III on their own. Ask Mainstream before you book.

Mainstream says all EPA testing organizations have until 1 January 2027 to update their exams to the new question bank. Ask which version your exam uses.

$7.95 for each additional Type I attempt.

Type I open-book: you need 21 of 25 in each of Core and Type I.

An open-book Type I does not count toward Type II, III or Universal — those need the closed-book proctored Core.

Type II, III and Universal: online, closed-book, proctored through ProctorU, 24/7 — book at least 72 hours ahead — in English or Spanish, or in person.

ProctorU may charge an extra fee for dates inside 72 hours.

The Universal test is valid for one year after the date of purchase, so buy it when you are ready to sit it.

Results right away; a temporary card is printable immediately if you pass, and a laminated card is mailed within 2 business days.
